Are you stuck in an exercise RUT?

Do you have a niggling low back, knee or shoulder which is irritated by everything that you do?

Do you feel that you are not progressing in your normal gym or fitness routines?

Have you done zero exercise in the last 20 years and simply do not know where to start with a regular exercise regime?

Perhaps Clinical or MAT pilates can get you on your way to pain free workouts?

There are many reasons we may suffer from recurrent injury and pain issues from exercise. At Frankston Osteopathy we treat a lot of patients who are regular in their exercise of choice but whom are often complaining about headaches after workouts, shoulder strains and sprains, clunky or sore hips, a knee that may swell up and down, or a low back that continues to “go out” and cause them significant pain.

Sometimes the cause for these issues are very simple and a treatment or recommendation may include a basic stretch, a tweak of the body mechanics or a loosening up of a particular muscle group.

On many occasions however, the causes for recurrent familiar pain is multifaceted. These causes, to name just a few, may include;

  • An imbalance or weakness in specific muscle groups
  • Compressed or chronically tightened muscles groups
  • Immobility in individual spinal segments
  • Inability to move the shoulder or hip joint without moving the shoulder girdle or pelvis
  • Poor gait (walking) patterns
  • Incorrect footwear
  • Incorrect technique
  • Over zealous stretching or zero post exercise stretching
  • Too much of the same exercise ie running or pump classes five times a week!
  • Strange sleeping positions
  • Poor lifestyle ergonomics

Addressing a mixture of the above issues may be difficult to squeeze in to one 30 minute session with your Osteopath. For this reason Frankston Osteopathy began running Clinical and Mat Pilates classes at PACE. We have people from all ages, backgrounds and abilities attending these classes. Many of these people have been patients at Frankston Osteopathy and have begun pilates for a number of reasons.

These have included;

  • People who wish to break chronic pain patterns.
  • People who wish to build a stronger “core”.
  • People who require post injury or post surgical rehabilitation to improve their mobility and strength.
  • Ladies who are postpartum who require strengthening of their pelvic floor and core.
  • People who simply want to feel long, lean and more fluid in their movements.

If you feel this article resonates with you please don’t hesitate to contact PACE or Frankston Osteopathy for more information regarding class times and availabilities.

Please be aware, pilates is addictive! The more you do, the more you learn about your body, its limitations and its successes.

“Oh, I cant do that” is often met with little oohs of delight when they realise they can. Perhaps you can too?
